SEO in Cardiff: How Local Businesses Win the Map Pack in 2026

What decides who appears in Cardiff's map pack in 2026, how to set up your Business Profile and reviews, which area pages work, and what local SEO should cost.

If you run a business in Cardiff, most new customers now meet you on a phone screen before they meet you in person. They type "accountant Cardiff", "dentist near me" or "electrician Pontcanna", glance at the map and the three businesses listed under it, and tap one. If you are missing from that small group, or your listing looks thin next to the others, the enquiry goes elsewhere.

SEO in Cardiff is the work of earning that spot, the places just below it in the ordinary results and, increasingly, a mention in Google's AI answers. The fundamentals have held steady through 2026, while the details that separate the businesses at the top have sharpened. This guide covers what decides the map pack, how to set up your Business Profile and reviews, whether area pages for Cardiff, Newport and the Vale of Glamorgan still work, how AI search fits in, and what a proper SEO engagement should include and cost.

I have spent more than twenty years in sales and marketing, fifteen of them building websites and running digital marketing, and local search is where I see small, specific changes make the biggest commercial difference. If you would rather have it handled for you, our SEO, AEO and GEO service covers everything in this guide.

How does SEO work for a Cardiff business in 2026?

A Cardiff business can be found in three places on Google: the map pack (the map and three listings shown for local searches), the ordinary organic results below it, and AI answers such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. Good local SEO works on all three at once, because they draw on much the same evidence.

Google is open about how the map results are chosen. Its help page on local ranking names three factors: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher, or from the place they named) and prominence (how well known you are, including links and reviews). It also states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. You can buy ads on the same page, but the map listings themselves have to be earned.

The organic results follow Google's wider ranking systems, which were adjusted by core updates in March and May 2026 and by spam updates in March, June, August and September (a running list is kept by Coalition Technologies). Google did not announce any new spam policies alongside those updates, and the direction has stayed consistent: useful pages from businesses that can show they are real and active.

What decides who appears in the Cardiff map pack?

The biggest levers are your Google Business Profile's primary category, how close you are to the searcher, the name on your profile, whether your address is in the city being searched and whether you are open at the time. Those were the top five factors in Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey of local search specialists, published in November 2025.

Two of those five you cannot change, and that matters in a city the size of Cardiff. Proximity means a business in Cardiff Bay will usually find it easier to appear for someone searching in Butetown than for someone in Llanishen or Radyr, however good its profile is. A business based in Penarth or Caerphilly may show up less often for searches that name Cardiff itself. The practical answer is to win convincingly in the areas closest to you, then widen your reach through your website, reviews and the organic results.

The three you control:

  • Primary category. This single choice tells Google what you are. Pick the most specific category that matches the service you most want to be found for, and check which categories the businesses already in your map pack use, since Google shows them on each listing.
  • Business name. Keywords in the name carry real weight, which is why some profiles cram in phrases like "Cardiff Plumber Emergency". Google's guidelines ask for your real-world business name, as it appears on your signage and paperwork, and stuffed names risk suspension. If your trading name already describes what you do, that helps. If it does not, leave it as it is.
  • Hours. Being open at the time of the search is a ranking factor in its own right. Keep regular and holiday hours accurate, and if you genuinely answer the phone in the evenings or at weekends, show it.

An illustration, not a real search result: the parts of a local listing you control that weigh most in the map pack, plus distance, which you cannot change.

How should you set up your Google Business Profile?

Fill in every field Google offers, choose your categories carefully, show your address only if customers visit you, and keep the profile active with photos, services and replies to reviews. Google's own guidance is that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results.

A checklist worth working through this week:

  1. Categories. One primary category for your main service, then secondary categories only for other services you genuinely offer.
  2. Services. List each service with a short, plain description. Whitespark's 2026 survey scored factors for AI search visibility for the first time, and listing Google's predefined services scored well there as well as in the map.
  3. Address or service areas. If customers come to you, show your full address. If you travel to customers, Google says you must hide your address and set service areas instead. You can add up to 20, and Google recommends keeping the overall area within about two hours' driving time of your base (Google Business Profile help).
  4. Photos. Real photos of your premises, team, vehicles and finished work, added regularly. Stock images do nothing for trust.
  5. Website link. Point it at the most relevant page: usually your home page, or the branch page if you have more than one location.

Where this goes wrong: using a virtual office or a friend's address in a better postcode to appear "in Cardiff". Google's guidelines rule out unstaffed virtual offices, and a suspended profile costs far more than a slightly weaker ranking.

How many reviews does a Cardiff business need?

Enough recent, genuine reviews to look like the obvious safe choice next to the other businesses in your map pack. There is no fixed number. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking, and the bar is set by your local competitors, so look at how many reviews the top three for your main search have and how recent they are.

For context, Pest & Property Solutions, the Cardiff pest control company whose new website went live in June 2026, has 344 Google reviews. In its first 36 days the new site brought in 112 enquiries, 82.7% of them from Google organic search. Those figures are Roddy Digital project data, set out in the Pest & Property case study. A strong review profile and a site built for search reinforce each other.

How to ask in a way that keeps working:

  • Ask every customer when they are happiest, usually just after the job is finished or the result is delivered, with a direct link to your review form.
  • Build the request into your process, for example a text or email that goes out automatically after each completed job, so it never depends on someone remembering.
  • Reply to every review, good and bad, calmly and specifically. Google notes that replying shows customers you value their feedback.
  • Mention the service and the area naturally in replies where it fits, without stuffing.

Worth knowing: since 6 April 2025, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act has made it unlawful in the UK to commission fake reviews, to hide that a review was incentivised, or to publish reviews in a misleading way, such as suppressing the negative ones. The CMA can fine businesses up to 10% of global annual turnover (CMS summary of the rules). Buying reviews was always a risk to your profile; it is now a legal risk as well.

Do area pages for Cardiff, Newport and the Vale still work?

Yes, when each page is genuinely useful to someone in that area. Area pages fail when they are copies of each other with the town name swapped, which Google treats as doorway abuse.

Google's spam policies list "multiple domain names or pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page" as an example of doorway abuse. A Newport page that reads exactly like the Penarth page with the place name changed fits that description. So does a long list of postcodes pasted into the footer.

A useful area page earns its place with things only that page can say:

  • The jobs or clients you have actually worked on there, with photos.
  • Reviews from customers in that area.
  • Practical detail: how quickly you can usually get there, parking or access notes, and whether you cover all of the area or part of it.
  • Local specifics that change the job, such as the older terraced streets of Cathays and Splott for a builder or damp specialist, or the business parks around Cardiff Gate and Celtic Springs for an IT support company.

For most Cardiff businesses a sensible structure is one strong page per service, linked to a small number of area pages for the places you serve most: Cardiff itself, then perhaps Penarth and the Vale of Glamorgan, Newport and Caerphilly. Start with the areas where you already have work and reviews to show, and add more only when you have something real to put on them.

What should your website do for local SEO?

Your website gives Google the detail your Business Profile cannot hold, and turns a visitor into an enquiry. The fundamentals are a page for each service, your location in page titles and copy where it is true, fast load times on a phone, and an obvious way to call or enquire on every page.

Our guide to getting found on Google covers these in depth, and local SEO for tradespeople has the trades-specific version. Three points matter most for Cardiff businesses:

  • Match the page to the search. Someone searching "commercial cleaning Cardiff" wants a page about commercial cleaning in Cardiff: what is included, who it suits and how to get a quote. A general services page rarely ranks for that.
  • Keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere. On your site, your Business Profile and directories such as Yell, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. In Whitespark's 2026 survey, three of the top five factors for AI search visibility were citation factors, meaning mentions of your business on other sites.
  • Measure enquiries as well as rankings. Set up Google Analytics 4 and Search Console, and track calls and form fills, so you can see which searches turn into work.

How does AI search change SEO in Cardiff?

AI search adds another place to be found, and it rewards the same groundwork with extra weight on mentions across the web. Ofcom found that about 30% of UK searches now show an AI Overview, and Google launched AI Mode in the UK in July 2025.

For local searches, the map is still doing most of the work. Darren Shaw, who runs the Whitespark survey, describes local search as "somewhat insulated" from AI disruption so far, because Google's local results still handle most local discovery. Where AI answers do appear, they lean on the same signals: a complete Business Profile, consistent mentions of your business on other sites, reviews, and pages that answer real questions clearly.

The practical additions for 2026 are service pages that answer the questions buyers ask (prices where you can share them, timescales, what is included), and genuine mentions from credible local sources: trade bodies, local news, suppliers, partners and event listings. Our explainer on generative engine optimisation covers how AI tools choose which businesses to cite.

What should an SEO engagement in Cardiff include and cost?

A good local SEO engagement covers your Business Profile, a review process, service and area pages, technical fixes, citations and mentions, and monthly reporting tied to enquiries. Published UK prices vary widely. Whito's analysis of 45 published monthly SEO prices from 16 UK providers, collected in June 2026, found a median of £799 a month, with budget options from £99 to £300, mainstream services from £350 to £1,000 and established agencies from £1,500 to £5,000 or more (Whito UK SEO pricing data).

For reference, our own Demand & Content packages run at £450 (Signal), £850 (Traction) and £1,500 (Flywheel) a month, with a three-month minimum.

Whoever you choose, a proper engagement should include:

  • An audit at the start: Business Profile, website, technical health, citations and the competitors in your map pack, ending in a prioritised plan.
  • Business Profile management, including categories, services, photos and review replies.
  • A review process built into your customer journey.
  • New or improved service and area pages, written around the questions buyers ask.
  • Citation clean-up and a plan for genuine local mentions.
  • Monthly reporting on calls, enquiries and Business Profile actions, with rankings as supporting evidence.

Where this goes wrong: guaranteed rankings, long contracts with no clear monthly deliverables, reports full of positions for phrases nobody searches, and anything involving bought reviews or links. Ask any provider which pages, profile changes and outreach you will get each month, and how they will connect the work to enquiries.

Where should a Cardiff business start this month?

Start with your Business Profile and reviews, because they move fastest, then fix the page behind your main service, then build area pages and mentions. A sensible order for the next three months:

  1. Weeks one and two: audit and complete your Business Profile (categories, services, hours, photos, address or service areas), and set up a review request after every job.
  2. Weeks three to six: rewrite or build the page for your main service, check the site loads quickly on a phone, and make calling or enquiring obvious on every page.
  3. Weeks seven to ten: make your name, address and phone number consistent across the main directories, and build your first one or two area pages with real local proof.
  4. Weeks eleven and twelve: review what changed in calls, enquiries and Business Profile actions, then plan the next quarter around what worked.

None of this needs a big budget to begin. It needs someone to own it every week, which is where most local SEO quietly stalls.

Questions
Do I need an office in Cardiff to rank for Cardiff searches?

It helps. Whitespark's 2026 survey ranks a physical address in the city being searched among the top five map pack factors. Businesses based just outside, in Penarth, Caerphilly or Newport, can still win Cardiff work through strong service pages, reviews and the organic results. Do not use a virtual office or a borrowed address to fake a presence: it breaks Google's guidelines and puts your whole profile at risk.

How long does local SEO take to show results?

Business Profile and review improvements can show up in the map within weeks, while new pages and mentions build over months. It depends on how competitive your search is: a broad professional service across Cardiff is a harder fight than a niche service in one suburb. Judge the work on enquiries over at least a full quarter, which is why our Demand & Content packages carry a three-month minimum.

Should my website be in Welsh as well as English?

If your customers search or buy in Welsh, or you work with public bodies that operate bilingually, Welsh pages can be a real advantage. Use proper translation, give each language its own web address and tell Google about the language versions with hreflang tags. Machine-translated pages that nobody has checked tend to read badly and undermine trust, so do it properly or leave it until you can.

What should a monthly SEO report show?

Start with outcomes: calls, form enquiries and booking requests from search, plus calls, direction requests and website clicks from your Business Profile. Then the supporting evidence: which pages gained visibility, how you appear across a map grid of your area, new reviews and the work completed that month. A report that only lists keyword positions tells you very little about whether SEO is paying for itself.

Is Google Ads better than SEO for a Cardiff business?

They do different jobs. Ads buy visibility from day one and stop the moment you stop paying, while SEO builds visibility that keeps working but takes longer to arrive. Many local businesses run both, using ads to test which services and areas produce enquiries, then investing in SEO for the ones that convert. If budget is tight, start with your Business Profile, which costs nothing to set up.
