What does the Swansea business picture look like?
Swansea is the second largest city in Wales and the commercial centre for South West Wales. The council counts 7,290 active businesses in the city in 2023, and 88.9% of its 108,000 employees work in service sectors (source).
Investment is reshaping where that work happens. The Swansea Bay City Deal is a portfolio of up to £1.3 billion across nine headline programmes, led by Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire councils, with energy, smart manufacturing, life science and digital among its themes (source). In the city centre, the 71/72 Kingsway office development provides space for 600 jobs and is aimed at tech, digital and creative businesses (source), while the 3,500-capacity Swansea Building Society Arena brings concerts and exhibitions to Copr Bay (source).
The universities add another layer. Swansea University teaches at Singleton Park and on its Bay Campus, and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David has a 23-acre campus at SA1 Swansea Waterfront (source). Graduates, researchers and spin-outs feed the city's tech and creative scene.
Tourism carries real weight too. Swansea Council puts the economic impact of tourism across Swansea Bay, Mumbles and Gower at over £696m in 2025, supporting more than 5,500 jobs, with staying visitors up 2.5% to 1.64 million (source).
How do customers find Swansea businesses online?
Swansea businesses tend to sell to locals, to visitors, or to buyers well beyond the city. Each group searches differently.
- Locals who need a service now. Searches such as "emergency plumber Morriston", "accountant Uplands" or "physio Sketty" go to businesses with a page for that service, the area named plainly, and a Google Business Profile full of recent reviews.
- Visitors planning a trip. Someone booking a weekend searches "dog-friendly cottage Gower" or "brunch Mumbles", usually on a phone, and more of them now ask ChatGPT to plan the whole day. Clear facts on your site (opening hours, prices, parking, what is nearby) make you easier to recommend.
- Buyers and partners further afield. A software firm selling across the UK meets suppliers from Cardiff, Bristol and London in its very first search. Case studies, named clients and a plain explanation of what you do carry more weight there than a Swansea postcode.
One local tip: the official destination site, visitswanseabay.com, is a platform for more than 300 local tourism businesses (source). If you run accommodation, food or activities, check your listing is current and links to the right page on your own site.
Where should Swansea's main sectors start?
Hospitality and tourism around Gower and Mumbles
With staying visitors rising, each booking you take direct saves a platform commission. Put a booking or enquiry button on every page, keep seasonal hours current on Google, and publish a page for each big weekend in the calendar. The council names the Wales Airshow and Ironman 70.3 Swansea as events that draw visitors from outside the area, and the city hosts the British Art Show in 2027 (source). A page that goes live a few weeks ahead can catch those searches.
Tech, digital and university spin-outs
Your website is often the first thing an investor, a recruit or a corporate buyer checks. Say what the product does in one sentence, show who uses it, and make the next step obvious. A customer portal, a data integration or an AI feature sits under web application development or AI integration, and we scope it as a project.
Professional services and trades
Accountants, solicitors, clinics and trades firms win on trust and proximity. Give each service its own page, name the districts you cover (Sketty, Mumbles, Morriston, Gorseinon, Clydach), and put reviews beside the contact form. That pattern is how Pest & Property Solutions in Cardiff now wins most of its enquiries from Google.
Clubs, charities and member organisations
Supporters' groups, sports clubs and charities need membership sign-up, news and events pages that volunteers can update without help. Keep the structure simple and test every form.
How much does a website cost for a Swansea business?
Swansea has the full spread of options, from low-cost template sites to large agency projects. The cheapest upfront price often leaves out the copy, the hosting, the updates or the local SEO, so compare what you will pay over a full year.
Our website packages are monthly and fixed in scope. Each includes design and build, copywriting, on-page SEO foundations, GA4 and Search Console, Google Business Profile set-up, hosting, SSL, security and backups.
| Package | Monthly (+ VAT) | Pages | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kickstart | £350 | Up to 10 | A Mumbles café, a sole trader or a small practice |
| Accelerate | £650 | Up to 25 | A firm with several services and districts to cover |
| Launch Pad | £1,000 | Up to 50 | Holiday businesses or firms with many service and location pages |
Each package runs on a twelve-month term and goes live in 30 days. Kickstart works out at £4,200 + VAT over the year. You can add a blog at £220 a month for 2 articles or £400 for 4, and Google Business Profile management at £95 a month. Bigger builds, such as a platform for a tech business, are scoped as Growth Partnerships over twelve months and priced after a call.
How does a Cardiff agency work with Swansea clients?
Most of it happens on Zoom. Calls are recorded, so you keep a copy of every decision and nobody loses an afternoon on the road. If you would rather meet face to face, our Pontcanna office is along the M4 and you are welcome there by arrangement.
I lead every engagement personally. I have spent fifteen years in websites and digital marketing, starting in sales, and worked on brands including Vodafone, Sainsbury's, Airbus and LVMH in earlier roles. Roddy Digital has been running since 2021, and you speak to the person doing the thinking from kick-off to launch.
What should you ask a Swansea web designer before you sign?
- Will you write for visitors as well as locals? A Gower business usually needs pages for both.
- How will AI assistants describe us? Ask how the site will show up when someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation.
- Who owns the domain and the site? Get the answer in writing.
- What does year one cost in total? Include hosting, updates and support.
- Do we need Welsh and English pages? Decide at the start, since it changes the page count and the price.
- Can we see named results? A count of enquiries says more than a portfolio of pretty screenshots.
