Jargon Buster / First-Party Data
First-Party Data.
Ads, Data & DemandInformation your business collects directly from its own customers and visitors, through its own channels.
What is first-party data?
First-party data is information your business collects directly from its own customers and audience, with their knowledge, through channels you control. Examples include enquiry form details, purchase history, email engagement, CRM notes, behaviour measured on your own website, and answers given in surveys or on calls.
Third-party data, by contrast, is collected by other companies, typically across many websites, and sold or passed on to advertisers.
Why it matters
Browsers such as Safari and Firefox block third-party cookies by default, and privacy law limits what can be gathered without consent, so data you hold yourself grows more valuable every year. A business with a clean list of past customers and enquirers can build ad audiences from it, feed real sales back to Google Ads, tailor its follow-up and spot repeat buyers. A business relying entirely on platform audiences has far less control over its own demand.
What good looks like
- Collected with consent Clear wording at the point of collection about how the data will be used, and a lawful basis under UK GDPR.
- Held in one place A CRM rather than inboxes, spreadsheets and someone's phone. Scattered data cannot be used.
- Kept clean Duplicates merged, fields consistent, and unsubscribes and deletion requests honoured promptly.
- Put to work Used for customer list audiences, offline conversion imports, segmentation and reporting, instead of sitting idle.
The honest view
First-party data is often talked about as a goldmine every business is sitting on. In most SMEs it looks more like a junk drawer: half the customer emails live in someone's personal inbox, the CRM was abandoned two years ago, and nobody can say which leads became customers.
The value comes from discipline. A few hundred well-kept records with clear consent and a known outcome are worth more than tens of thousands of stale or scraped contacts, and they are the raw material for almost every useful thing in modern advertising.
What to do about it
Find out where your customer and enquiry data actually lives today and list every location. Choose one system as its home, even a simple CRM, and move the current year's records in first. Add a clear consent line to every form. Then pick one use to prove the value, such as uploading past customers to exclude them from prospecting ads, or importing closed sales into Google Ads so bidding learns what a real customer looks like.
