Jargon Buster / Conversion Tracking
Conversion Tracking.
Ads, Data & DemandRecording when a visitor enquires, calls, books or buys, and linking that action back to where they came from.
What is conversion tracking?
Conversion tracking is the set-up that records when a visitor completes an action you value, such as submitting an enquiry form, calling from an ad, booking an appointment or buying online, and links that action back to the channel or campaign that brought them. It usually runs through tags on your website configured to fire on specific events.
GA4 calls these actions key events; Google Ads still calls them conversions.
Why it matters
Without conversion tracking, marketing can only be judged on clicks and visits, which measure footfall rather than business. It matters even more because ad platforms bid using this data. Smart Bidding in Google Ads learns from the conversions you feed it, so if you track the wrong thing, such as visits to a thank-you page that people can reach by other routes, the system becomes very good at buying the wrong outcome.
What good looks like
- Real outcomes counted Track form submissions, calls and bookings, and mark the ones that matter as primary. Leave page views and scroll depth as secondary signals.
- Each lead counted once Duplicate tags and refreshed thank-you pages inflate the numbers and mislead automated bidding.
- Phone calls included For trades, clinics and professional firms, many leads ring. Call tracking or Google's call conversions stop those leads vanishing from reports.
- Outcomes fed back Importing which leads became paying customers from your CRM lets ad platforms optimise for revenue instead of raw form fills.
The honest view
Broken conversion tracking is one of the most common faults in ad accounts, and it is rarely obvious from the dashboard. Numbers still appear; they are just wrong. A form plugin update stops an event firing, someone duplicates a tag, or a new page template drops the Google tag altogether. The platforms then optimise against faulty data with complete confidence.
The fix is unglamorous: test every conversion action yourself after every website change, and check that platform totals roughly match the enquiries landing in your inbox.
What to do about it
List every action that genuinely matters to your business, then open Google Ads and GA4 and check that each one is tracked, fires once and is correctly set as primary or secondary. Submit a test enquiry yourself and confirm it appears. Compare last month's tracked conversions with the real enquiries in your inbox or CRM; a large gap means something is broken. If customers phone you, make sure calls are being counted somewhere.
