What is conversion rate optimisation (CRO)?
Conversion rate optimisation (CRO) is the process of increasing the proportion of website visitors who complete a valuable action, such as submitting an enquiry, booking a call or buying a product. Conversion rate is conversions divided by visitors, shown as a percentage. CRO uses analytics, user research and testing to find out why people do not convert, then changes pages, offers and journeys to remove those reasons.
Why it matters
CRO improves the return on every visitor you already have. If you spend on ads or SEO, a higher conversion rate means more enquiries from the same budget, which lowers your cost per lead without a bigger media spend. It also tells you things about your buyers: which objections stop them, which proof reassures them and which offers they respond to. Those findings are as useful in sales conversations as on the website.
How it works
- Measure accurately Set up conversion tracking so you know which pages and sources produce enquiries.
- Find the leaks Use analytics, session recordings and customer feedback to see where people drop out and why.
- Form a hypothesis Write down what you will change, why you expect it to help and what result would prove it.
- Test or roll out Run an A/B test where traffic allows, or make the change and monitor closely where it does not.
- Repeat on a rhythm Treat CRO as a steady rhythm of small improvements, reviewed monthly.
The honest view
A lot of CRO advice comes from high-traffic e-commerce, where testing a headline can reach a reliable answer in days. A B2B firm with a few hundred visitors a month cannot run statistically sound A/B tests on minor details. For smaller sites, CRO is mostly qualitative: watch real sessions, read enquiry forms, ask customers what nearly stopped them, and fix the obvious problems with clarity, proof and simpler forms. A higher conversion rate is also meaningless if lead quality falls, so judge results on qualified enquiries.
What to do about it
Confirm your conversion tracking works by submitting a test enquiry and checking it registers. Then find the page with the most traffic and the weakest conversion rate. Watch ten recorded sessions on it, or ask three recent customers what they looked for before getting in touch. List the three biggest friction points, fix the most obvious one first and measure enquiries over the following month.
