Jargon Buster / Landing Page

Landing Page.

Brand, Web & Design

A focused web page built for one audience and one action, usually the destination for an ad or campaign.

What is a landing page?

A landing page is a standalone web page designed for a single audience and a single action, such as requesting a quote or downloading a guide. It is usually the destination for a paid ad, email or campaign link. A homepage serves many visitors with many intentions; a landing page removes distractions and keeps the message tightly matched to whatever brought the visitor there.

Why it matters

Sending paid traffic to a homepage is one of the most common ways SMEs waste ad budget. Someone who clicked an ad for emergency boiler repair in Cardiff wants to see that exact service, proof and a phone number, rather than a general overview of the company. A matched landing page tends to convert more of the clicks you pay for. In Google Ads, landing page experience is also one of the three components of Quality Score, which affects what you pay.

What good looks like

  • Message match The headline repeats the promise of the ad or link that brought the visitor.
  • One clear action A single primary CTA, with navigation trimmed so visitors are not pulled elsewhere.
  • Proof near the ask Reviews, accreditations or results placed close to the form or button.
  • Fast on mobile Loads quickly on a phone, because that is where much paid traffic arrives.
  • Tracked properly Conversion tracking in place and tested before any money is spent sending traffic.

The honest view

Landing pages are often built once, at campaign launch, and never revisited. The bigger gains come from having several, each matched to a distinct search intent or audience, instead of one generic page trying to do everything. The other mistake is making them so thin they cannot answer real questions. A short page works for a simple, low-cost offer. A higher-value B2B service needs enough detail, proof and FAQs to carry a cautious buyer to the point of enquiry.

What to do about it

List every campaign or ad group you run and the page each one sends traffic to. Wherever distinct offers all point to the homepage or the same general page, build a dedicated landing page for the highest-spending one first. Match the headline to the ad, put one clear CTA near the top, add proof beside it and confirm conversion tracking fires. Compare cost per lead after a month.
