Jargon Buster / Zero-Click Search

Zero-Click Search.

Search & AI Visibility

A search where the person gets their answer on the results page and never clicks through to a website.

What is zero-click search?

A zero-click search is one where the person gets what they need directly on the search results page and never clicks through to a website. The answer might come from an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a map listing, a knowledge panel, or a quick fact such as opening hours. AI assistants extend the same pattern well beyond Google.

Why it matters

Visibility and visits are drifting apart. Your business can be seen by many searchers without any of them landing on your site, which makes traffic a weaker measure of success than it used to be. For informational content the effect is obvious. For local businesses, many zero-click searches still end in a phone call or a request for directions from the Google Business Profile: a lead that never touches the website.

Where it happens

  • AI Overviews and AI Mode Summaries answer the question in full on the results page.
  • Featured snippets A quoted passage answers a simple question above the ordinary results.
  • Local results Map listings show hours, reviews and a call button.
  • Knowledge panels Key facts about businesses, people and organisations appear in a panel beside the results.
  • AI assistants Tools such as ChatGPT give a written answer, sometimes with few or no links.

The honest view

Zero-click is real, but it is often used as an excuse for poor results. Simple factual queries were never going to bring valuable visitors. Searches that lead to a buying decision, such as comparing suppliers, checking prices or booking a service, still produce clicks and calls.

The sensible response is to stop judging success by raw traffic, and to make sure that wherever you are seen without a click, you are seen accurately and favourably.

What to do about it

Track the outcomes zero-click searches still produce: calls, direction requests and website clicks from your Google Business Profile performance data, plus impressions in Search Console. Check that the facts Google shows about you, such as hours, services and contact details, are correct. Then shift content effort towards pages that need a click to deliver value: quotes, tools, detailed comparisons and proof of your work.
