AI Overviews.

Search & AI Visibility

AI-written summaries Google shows at the top of some search results, with links to the pages it drew on.

What are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results, drawing on several web pages and linking to the sources used. They launched in the US in May 2024, reached the UK in August 2024 and now appear in more than 200 countries and territories. They sit alongside AI Mode, Google's separate conversational search experience.

Why it matters

For informational searches, the overview often answers the question before anyone scrolls to the ordinary results. That changes the economics of content written to attract early-stage readers: a guide that once brought steady visitors may now be summarised above your listing. The flip side is that a citation puts your brand in front of buyers while they are forming a view, which matters most for considered purchases such as legal services or industrial equipment.

How it works

  • Triggered by the query Google decides search by search whether an overview helps. They appear most on informational and comparison questions.
  • Drawn from the index Sources come from Google's normal search index, so a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be cited.
  • Linked citations Overviews link to the pages they used, though the layout and prominence of those links keep changing as Google tests.
  • Snippet controls apply The nosnippet and max-snippet settings limit how your content is used. Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews.

The honest view

The panic and the hype are both overdone. Overviews have clearly taken clicks from simple informational queries, and anyone who built traffic on answering easy questions has felt it. But overviews lean on pages that already rank and are already trusted, so the work that earns citations is the work that earns rankings. Google's May 2026 guidance says as much.

What is underrated is measurement. AI Overview and AI Mode impressions are counted in Search Console's performance data, and Google began testing dedicated generative AI reports with some sites in June 2026.

What to do about it

Pick your twenty most valuable search terms, check which ones trigger an overview, and note who is cited. In Search Console, look for pages where impressions held steady while clicks fell; that pattern often points to an overview answering the question. For those pages, add what a summary cannot give: your pricing, a worked example, a calculator or a real job your team delivered. Give the reader a reason to click through.
