Jargon Buster / Design System

Design System.

Brand, Web & Design

A shared library of reusable components, styles and rules that keeps a website or product consistent as it grows.

What is a design system?

A design system is a shared library of reusable interface components (buttons, forms, cards, navigation), the styles behind them (colour, type, spacing) and the rules for using them. It usually exists both as design files and as matching code. A design system lets designers and developers build new pages by assembling proven parts, so a website or product stays consistent however many people work on it.

Why it matters

Without a design system, each new page is designed from scratch, which costs time and introduces small inconsistencies that add up: five button styles, three shades of the brand colour, forms that behave differently. Visitors read that as a lack of care. A design system makes new pages and features faster and cheaper to produce, lets accessibility fixes apply everywhere at once and reduces your dependence on whoever built the original site.

The parts that matter

  • Design tokens Named values for colour, type size, spacing and corner radius, so a change in one place updates everywhere.
  • Reusable components Reusable building blocks, from buttons to pricing tables, each with defined variants and states.
  • Common patterns Agreed ways of combining components for common tasks, such as a contact form or a case study layout.
  • Usage documentation Guidance on when and how to use each part, with examples.
  • Clear ownership A named owner and a simple process for adding or changing components.

The honest view

The phrase sounds like something only large tech companies need, and a fully documented enterprise system would be overkill for most SMEs. The useful version is much smaller: a defined set of tokens and twenty or so components that your website is actually built from. Where design systems fail is governance. Without an owner, people create one-off variations under deadline pressure and the system quietly decays. A small system that is enforced beats a large one that is ignored.

What to do about it

Screenshot every button, heading style, form and card on your site and group the near-duplicates. The number of variants tells you how much a design system would save. If you are planning a rebuild, ask for the tokens and components to be defined before page design starts, and for them to exist in the CMS as reusable blocks. Name one person in your business who approves any new additions.
