What is UX design?
UX design (user experience design) is the practice of shaping how a website, app or service works for the people using it, so they can achieve what they came to do easily and with confidence. It covers research, information architecture, user journeys, wireframes, interaction design and testing. UX focuses on behaviour and outcomes; UI design then handles the visual layer that sits on top.
Why it matters
Every point of confusion on your site costs enquiries. If a prospect cannot work out whether you cover their area, cannot find how you price or gives up on a long form, they leave without telling you why. UX work finds and removes those failures. In client portals and internal tools, good UX reduces training time, mistakes and support calls, which shows up directly in staff hours.
How it works
- Research first Learn about users through interviews, analytics, sales conversations and observation.
- Structure the content Organise content and features so they match how users think.
- Prototype cheaply Sketch and wireframe flows, then build clickable versions to test ideas cheaply.
- Test with users Watch real users attempt real tasks and note where they struggle.
- Iterate after launch Fix the problems found, then keep checking after launch with live data.
The honest view
UX is frequently reduced to wireframes, or treated as a phase that happens once at the start. Its most valuable activity is watching real people use the thing, and that is the step most often cut for time. A handful of short user tests usually exposes the biggest problems. UX also reaches beyond the screen: slow quotes, confusing invoices and unanswered enquiries are experience failures too. The best UX work often changes the business process behind the website.
What to do about it
Ask three people who match your typical customer to complete one task on your website while you watch quietly, such as finding a service and starting an enquiry. Do it over a recorded video call so you can review it later. Note where they pause, misread or give up. Fix the most common problem first, then repeat the exercise before any redesign is commissioned.
