SEO (Search Engine Optimisation).

Search & AI Visibility

The work of earning more visibility and enquiries from unpaid search results on Google and other engines.

What is SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the practice of improving a website so it appears more prominently in unpaid search results for the terms its buyers use. It spans three areas: technical health, so search engines can crawl and understand the site; content, so pages answer real questions well; and authority, earned through links, mentions and reputation. Done well, it also shapes visibility in AI-generated answers.

Why it matters

Search is where buyers go when they have a need and are ready to act. Ranking for the terms that matter brings a steady flow of enquiries without paying for each click, and the effect compounds as pages gain authority. For an established SME, a strong organic presence also reduces dependence on paid ads and referral networks, both of which can dry up or get more expensive without warning.

The main pillars

  • Technical SEO Speed, crawlability, indexing, mobile usability and site structure: the foundations everything else sits on.
  • Useful content Pages that match search intent and answer questions better than the alternatives.
  • Authority and reputation Links, mentions and reviews that show others trust you.
  • Clear measurement Search Console and analytics data that tie rankings to enquiries, so effort goes where it pays.

The honest view

SEO has a reputation problem it partly deserves: monthly retainers that produce reports full of rankings for terms nobody searches, and little else. Good SEO is mostly unglamorous. It means fixing what stops Google reading your site, writing pages that answer buyers' questions properly, and earning a reputation others link to and talk about.

Claims that AI has killed SEO are premature. Google says optimising for its AI features is still SEO, and many AI tools search the web and favour the same trusted, well-ranked pages.

What to do about it

Start with three questions. Can Google find and index all your important pages? Check Search Console. Do you have a clear, specific page for each service and location you want to win work for? Compare your site's pages against your service list. Are people finding you for commercial searches, or only for your brand name? Check the queries report. The gaps those questions expose are your first priorities.
